Be reasonable.

[This post has been "rescued" from a 2010 Facebook post.]

You may have heard this saying: The reasonable person adapts to circumstances and the environment. The unreasonable person expects circumstances and the environment to adapt to them. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable person.

Seeing as how Singapore has progressed quite a bit since independence, can we then conclude that Singaporeans are probably a bunch of unreasonable people?

I mean the national pastime of complaining is a sign of this unreasonableness isn't it?

But wait. The one thing Singaporeans complain about the most? The Government. The PAP.

And why do we complain about?

HDB flats - price too high, the waiting list is too long.

Car ownership - COE is ridiculous. Road tax is too high. Petrol tax. Congestion on the road and raising the ERP is just unreasonable.

Hong Kong's income tax is lower than Singapore, our tax policy is unreasonable. GST is not exempt for basic necessities. That's unreasonable.

And it's all because the PAP is unreasonable!

Hey wait! If all progress depends on the unreasonable person, and PAP is unreasonable, then all progress that Singapore has had is because of the PAP.

And Singapore progressed the most in the first 20 - 25 years under LKY. He was VERY unreasonable. He even considered eugenics to get our graduate women to get married and have kids!

Then in the 90's we had a new PM and our economic growth was slower. Goh Chok Tong was more reasonable. But growth slowed down. Maybe LKY should have forced thru his eugenics programme.

Then Lee Hsien Loong took over as PM and we've had some of the worst years - in fact we even had negative growth just recently! He must've been really reasonable last year.
